A former student at the Ecole Nationale d’Administration, Michel Clair was an auditor and then public auditor at the Court of Auditors (1975-91) before holding a variety of positions within government bodies and several ministries. In particular, he was chief of staff for the Minister of Trade, Craft and Services from 1986 to 1988.

In 1991, he joined Compagnie Bancaire, where he was General Secretary and a member of the Management Board. After the merger between Paribas and Compagnie Bancaire, he became a member of the Paribas Executive Committee in charge of property and shared services. He joined the Klépierre group in 1996 as a member of the Board of Directors and became Chairman the following year. From 1998 to 2012, he was Chairman of the Management Board and then of the Supervisory Board at Klépierre. He is currently Chairman of Astria, as well as France Habitation and OGIF, and is Chairman of the Board of Directors of Comexposium.
